Breast Reduction

“I love the results of my breast reduction surgery”

What is breast reduction surgery?

If you have uncomfortably large breasts that are causing physical or mental distress, you may benefit from a breast reduction. This procedure reduces the size of the breasts and lifts them into a lighter, perkier position. Your breast reduction procedure will be completely customised to complement your natural contours while meeting your specific desires.

Breast reduction has one of the highest satisfaction rates (>95%) among our patients, because it often helps to dramatically improve their quality of life.

Breast uplift is primarily for patients who specifically need improvement to their breast fullness, removal of excess skin, or correction of progressive breast droop to achieve a pert and more youthful breast.

Breast Reduction FAQ’s

We have listed the most commonly asked questions about breast reduction here. If you don’t see what you are looking for or want more information, bring all questions and concerns to your consultation appointment.

  • The cost (inclusive care) of your breast reduction may vary depending on the size of your breast and the specific hospital prices and is typically between £7,000 and £8,000. This includes all your aftercare and dealing with any immediate complications from your surgery, and we will confirm this in writing shortly after your consultation.

  • Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. You will not feel any discomfort during your procedure. Most people can go home same day or after an overnight hospital stay. There will, however, be some pain, soreness, and bruising in the days following surgery but it is generally not a very painful operation. Your comfort and recovery will be hastened by taking time to rest and taking your prescribed analgesics as required.

  • In preparation for breast reduction, you may need to stop using certain herbs, supplements, and medications. If you use tobacco products, you will need to quit at least six weeks in advance of your procedure. These steps will help prevent infection and excessive bleeding and reduce the risk of thick and visible surgical scars.

Prepare a recovery area at home that will allow you to rest peacefully for the first few days after surgery – and make sure you have a trusted adult to help while you recover.

  • Yes, a breast uplift is still possible, even on smaller breasts. Many women successfully achieve perkier breasts through an uplift, and it is a particularly popular procedure after pregnancy and breastfeeding which can cause the breasts to lose their shape in some cases.

  • As with all surgery, it is normal to expect some temporary swelling and bruising. These side effects will generally settle down within four weeks. We normally advice you to buy new permanent Bra after eight weeks when the swelling has fully subsided.

Most people can resume work within two weeks after surgery with expected wound healing of two to four weeks.

  • Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts should fit your frame more attractively. If your breasts were causing physical pain, back strain, or physical limitations, breast reduction surgery should be able to improve range of motion and eliminate discomfort as well.

Each woman is unique. The best way to learn what your procedure may be able to do for you is through a one-on-one consultation at our office.

  • Patients come to us for a breast reduction procedure at a range of life phases—during their college years, post-baby, or after they’ve become a grandparent—yet all of them are looking for more comfort, confidence, and freedom. You may want more freedom with fashion choices, crave a more active lifestyle, or hope to reduce soreness and pain in your neck, shoulders, and back. Here are some of the concerns women share with us:

    • You are self-conscious about your breast size

    • Your breasts are large and out of proportion with your body frame

    • You struggle to shop for clothes that fit and flatter you—and have never found the perfect supportive, comfortable bra

    • You wear more than one sports bra to exercise

    • You have a dent or “bra strap grooving” in your shoulders

    • You feel limited in your ability to play sports, dance, or practice yoga

    • You have rashes or skin irritation under your breasts

    • You have breast ptosis (drooping of the breast)

Whatever your reasons may be, if you are thinking about breast reduction, it’s a great time to sit down with your surgeon, we will meet with you in a consultation and answer questions, explain different options like breast lift (where appropriate), and empower you with the information needed to decide: the options that are best for you, the results you can expect, and safety and risks.

  • • Reducing chronic pain from carrying around heavy breasts

    • Reducing irritation and rashes under the breasts

    • Finding clothes that fit well more easily

    • Help with your posture

    • Create a more comfortable and proportional size that allows easier and better clothing fit

    • Address asymmetrical breast size

    • Improvement in ability to exercise and overall quality of life

    • Improvement in the size and shape of your breasts and personal gg confidence

  • Mostly definitely! A breast reduction works by lifting the nipple and reducing skin and breast tissue, leaving the breast smaller and up lifted. Uplift at reduction results in a more youthful and perkier breast appearance.

Breast reduction makes the breast smaller and uplifted. A mastopexy (uplift) simply lifts the breast but keeps all the breast tissue so leaving the breast at the same overall volume.

  • How much smaller a breast reduction will make you is variable as this comes down to partly patient preference and partly what is safe. We can typically reduce your Breasts to between a B and D cup depending on your pre-existing size and outcome preference.

  • Sensation is usually fully retained after a breast lift but has a 20% chance of being lost in a breast reduction. The initial reduction in sensation usually improves over several weeks and months.

We will also reduce the size of your areolar while uplifting your whole breast and nipple. The risk of losing your nipples is very small (less than 1%)

  • Yes, both procedures can be safely carried out to enhance both the size and appearance of the breasts. For patients who want to achieve a fuller effect, a mastopexy alone may not deliver the desired result, whereas implants will help fill out the breast to give a firmer shape.

It may even be the case that the breast needs less skin tightening once an implant is in place.

  • The scars for breast reduction and mastopexy are often similar. Mastopexy scars are often smaller and are typically “lollipop” shaped while breast reduction scars are around the nipple, down from the nipple and under the breast crease are more often the ‘anchor’ shaped.

  • The main effects of a breast lift are to tighten the breast skin and lift the nipple. This will achieve more fullness in the upper part of the breast, especially in a bra.

However, there can still be some reduced fullness out of a bra in the upper part of your breast if the skin is very stretched as it cannot ‘hold’ the breast tissue in position. In some cases, an implant in addition to a breast lift gives that extra fullness.
